Daniel Galera (1979) is a Brazilian writer, translator and the founder of the Livros do Mal publishing house. Galera is considered one of the most influential authors of his generation. He has published five novels, perhaps most notably his 2012 novel Barba ensopada de sangue (Blood-Drenched Beard) that won the prestigious São Paulo literary award. The protagonist of the novel is notable for his affliction of prosopagnosia – the inability to recognise the faces of the people he knows. He sets out in search of his grandfather whose features are said to be identical to his own. Also, the protagonist is nameless – Galera has said that a name is like a prison that keeps the character from evolving. The result is a powerful meditation, with some crime and horror elements, on the human fate. Daniel Galera will talk to journalist and Brazil specialist Mele Pesti.
