Tobi Kunze

In 2009, it was announced in the local news: “Jaan Malin is the third best slammer in Europe!”. This was a reference to the European Poetry Tournament held in Berlin that brought together a couple of hundred poets from a couple of dozen countries and was won by Hanover-born German poet Tobias Kunze (1981). Naturally, the victory in Berlin is not his sole achievement. In 2008, he was crowned the poetry slam champion of North Rhine-Westphalia, and he also won the rap slam competition in Zürich the same year. The next year, Kunze tied for first place at the European Poetry Slam Days. He is also active in the rap band Big Tune. All this shows Kunze as a charismatic performer who often directly interacts with the audience, creating, for example, poems out of words shouted from the audience. Kunze has visited Estonia on several occasions and he will make several appearances at the HeadRead festival. On Friday 26 May at 8 pm, he will perform a solo show at the Estonian Writers’ Union. On Saturday 27 May at 3 pm, Kunze will hold the poetry slam workshop ‘Writing and Performing: Methods of Interaction’ at the Tallinn Central Library (prior registration required by writing to info@headread.ee). The same evening, he will be a special guest at the Estonian Poetry Slam final at 10 pm at the KuKu club.
