Graeme Macrae Burnet
Graeme Macrae Burnet (1967) is a Scottish writer. He has published two novels. His first work, the psychological thriller The Disappearance of Adèle Bedeau (2013) was well received. The title refers to the central mystery of the book: Adèle Bedeau, a grumpy but attractive waitress at a local bistro in the little French town of Saint-Louis disappears. His second novel His Bloody Project (2016) tells the true story of 17-year-old Roderick Macrae, who committed a triple murder in 1869. Such a massacre begs the question: why did he do it? Burnet’s novel makes clever use of the written materials of the era: the memoirs of the defendant, police records, the psychiatrist’s notes and the press coverage of the trial. The result is both brutal and dreamlike. The novel was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize last year. Burnet will discuss his crime stories and more with translator Krista Kaer.
