The idea behind the HeadRead festival has been literature in Tallinn – we have made an effort to make literature in Tallinn more visible. Since the festival is celebrating its 10th year in 2018, we began an initiative that throws a spotlight on the city of Tallinn in literature in cooperation with several literary organisations. Tallinn has been described in literature more often than we can imagine. This does not mean not just Estonian literature (best known examples include the Mustamäe of Mati Unt and the Old Town of Jaan Kross and Indrek Hargla), but also Baltic German and Russian literature (one only has to think of Sergei Dovlatov and Vasily Aksyonov). So a public joint reading of Tallinn-related literature will be held in the middle of the festival, on Saturday 26 May at 12 pm at the Freedom Square (Vabaduse väljak) to celebrate Tallinn and literature and Tallinn as a literary city. Everyone who is passionate about or interested in literature is welcome! Also, in April 2018, the process of collecting and mapping Tallinn-themed literature began in cooperation with the Tallinn Literary Centre, the Under and Tuglas Literary Centre and the Tallinn Central Library; everyone is free to participate and there is no deadline.
