Kertu Sillaste (1973) is an Estonian illustrator, book designer, textile artist and children’s author. From 2002-2014 she worked as an artist at the Tallinn Central Library, and from 2014 she has been running the art chamber of the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre. She has designed and illustrated the books of many Estonian children’s authors – she has collaborated with Mika Keränen, Aino Pervik, Jaanus Vaiksoo and Kätlin Vainola. Sillaste’s first book, Pannkoogiraamat (The Pancake Book, Päike ja Pilv) is aimed at little children and was published in 2012. It is a witty cook book in head rhyme that encourages children’s interest in cooking. It is only natural that Sillaste has written books on art for small children. Igaüks teeb isemoodi kunsti (Everyone Makes Their Own Kind of Art, Päike ja Pilv, 2016) talks about the various areas of figurative art: painting, sculpture, photography etc. Last year’s Mina olen kunstnik (I Am an Artist, Koolibri, 2018) is an overview of the artist’s thoughts, aims, and activities. The book was nominated for the children’s literature award of the Estonian Cultural Endowment.
