Andri Snær Magnason (1973) is an Icelandic writer who has written novels, short stories, plays, poetry, children’s books and essays. It is no wonder he has won the Icelandic Literary Prize in the categories of the best work of fiction, the best children’s book and best academic writing. In addition, Magnason has directed three documentaries. This is not all: in 2016, Magnason was a candidate in the presidential elections in Iceland and with nearly 15 percent of the votes, won the honourable third place. Magnason’s social and political agenda and literary work prominently feature environmental topics. This focus is evident, for example, in his 2019 book Um tímann og vatnið (On Time and Water). The book does what many of us are unwilling to do – take a look into the future of our planet and the coming changes, such as the disappearance of glaciers, the rise in sea levels and the acidity of seawater and other phenomena that are convenient to dismiss as irrelevant or exaggerated issues. Estonian translations of Magnason’s work include the children’s story Sagan af bláa hnettinum (The Story of The Blue Planet). The work centres on a planet inhabited by children who do not grow up. The star that arrives on their planet with a great explosion sets off a series of dangerous events that truly tests the inventiveness and friendship of children.
