Kate Mosse (1961) is a British writer and journalist who has been awarded the Order of the British Empire. She began her literary career with non-fiction. Mosse’s 1993 debut Becoming a Mother looks at everything connected to pregnancy and childbirth. Two works from Mosse’s substantial and diverse oeuvre have been translated into Estonian. First – Labyrinth, one of her best known novels that combines the Middle Ages and today. The novel draws on 11th century French history, mainly from the Catharism movement that spread in the Occitania region and the crusade that was launched against it. Mosse’s work is fantastic but true to history and became a veritable bestseller, second only to The DaVinci Code in the bestseller list in 2006. The second Estonian translation is the 2014 mystical crime novel The Taxidermist’s Daughter. The author has called it a love letter to the village of Fishbourne where she grew up. The novel takes place in early 20th century and follows young Constantia Gifford, who lives with her bitter father in a house that used to be a museum for rare birds. Additional colour is provided by the body of an unknown woman, Constantia’s issues with memories, a series of interesting characters and the atmosphere reminiscent of Poe.
