Philip Gwynne Jones and Jason Goodwin

Philip Gwynne Jones is a Welsh writer living in and writing about Venice. He first visited the city in 1994 for his work at the European Space Agency. A couple of decades later he discovered his calling as a crime writer, and in 2018 he published his debut novel The Venetian Game. Its protagonist is Nathan Sutherland, the British Honorary Consul in Venice, who gets involved in mysterious adventures when he is asked, for a considerable sum, to hold on to a package containing a book of prayers illustrated by the Venetian master Giovanni Bellini. In the novel Vengeance in Venice published a year later, Sutherland is at the British pavilion at the Venice Biennale where a famous critic loses his head – unfortunately literally. Jones has published five Nathan Sutherland novels so far, the sixth titled The Angels of Venice links an exciting plot to the floods that hit the city on 12 November 2019. Jones has also written an autobiographical work about Venice, titled To Venice with Love (2019), about how he and his wife Caroline arrived in Venice and how the city gradually accepted them.
