Russia’s aggression in Ukraine shows no signs of waning and with the anxiety over the war in the back of our minds, it may lead to the urgent question about what an Estonian living under the NATO umbrella could do to help Ukrainians. There are actually more options than one may think at first. In addition to material and financial assistance, we can help Ukrainian culture survive and continue, including the Ukrainian written word. This is why during the HeadRead festival, the Ukrainian Cultural Centre, one of the cosiest cultural nests in Tallinn’s Old Town, will host a notable lineup of poets and translators to demonstrate the sound of contemporary Ukrainian poetry. Translations and interpretations will be read by Maarja Kangro, Igor Kotjuh, Mathura, Katja Novak, Katrin Väli and Anna Verschik. The works of Lyubov Yakymchuk, Liudmyla Taran ja Olesya Mamchych will be performed. Ukrainian poets Boris Khersonsky and Lyudmila Khersonskaya, who have direct experiences of the impact of the war, will bring added weight to the event. Musical interludes will be provided by writer, translator, lecturer and content creator Irena Peterson-Pavliuk.
