Tiina Tammer (1960) is an Estonian publisher, journalist and writer. She is best known as one of the directors of the publishing house Tammerraamat, founded in 2005. Tammerraamat has published a lot of good Estonian children’s literature over the years, but last year Tammer made her own debut in this genre – her work Siin on kodu was nominated for the Children’s Literature Award of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia. According to Tammer, the reason for writing the book was energy policy, specifically the intention to build a nuclear power plant in her beautiful hometown. Driven by a sense of safety, Tammer decided to record the beautiful nature of her home for her four grandchildren, at least in written form. Through the book, small readers can get to know the plants and animals of the area. At the heart of the book is a red deer looking for a new home, and it has to overcome a number of obstacles to find a home and feel at home – to begin with, it has to deal with a rabbit who won’t allow it to eat wood sorrel. Through her love of the nature her homeland, Tammer asks important questions that are relevant to people of all ages: how do we reconcile our differences, how could we be considerate, and how do we teach others to be considerate?
