Triinu Laan

Triinu Laan (1975) is an Estonian-rural poet and children’s writer. Laan debuted in 2007 with a picture book entitled Suur must koer. Suur must pini, which was named the Best Animal Story at the Põlvepikuraamatu literary competition. Altogether, Laan has published six children’s books, with his latest work Poiss ja papa (2024) being awarded the Children’s Literature Prize of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia. As its title suggests, the book describes the friendship and activities of a very young man and a very old man, a preschool boy and his great-grandfather. Despite the sad fact that Papa and the boy mourn the loss of Granny, the boy learns how to live with Gramps – it is always possible to go from grief to hope. Through children’s literature, Laan skillfully highlights the poetics of everyday life, the significance of the little things, the importance of the present moment – no matter how insignificant it may be on the surface. In addition to the heartfelt plot, Laan trains her young readers in the Võro language, as the boy and Gramps communicate in that language.
