At first glance, illustration is not intended to be an independent work of art – an illustration illustrates, i.e. describes, explains or shows something else, such as a fictional story. But a good illustration can not only overstate but also retell what it illustrates, compressing or expanding the crux of the story. Sometimes, however, the question may arise: whether the illustration illustrates the text, or whether the text illustrates the illustration – one only needs to look at the legacy of Tove Jansson or Ilon Wikland. However, it is even more complicated (or actually simpler): a compelling illustration is a sovereign work of art that can speak even if the viewer has no connection with the source material of the illustration. This independence, the inner eloquence of powerful illustrations, is what we invite you to feel with writer Jan Kaus.
