Rob Wilkins

Rob Wilkins is a long-time personal assistant and friend of world-famous fantasy writer Terry Pratchett (1948-2015). This is what drives Wilkins’ acclaimed book Terry Pratchett: A Life With Footnotes. Wilkins began writing about his friend five years after Pratchett’s death, based on materials from Pratchett’s unfinished autobiography. Wilkins has admitted that, on the one hand, he was terrified by the prospect of writing about such an important author, the master of Discworld, but, on the other hand, that same fear kept his mind sharp. Wilkins’ biography is an honest and touching insight into the life and work of the famous writer. On the one hand, Wilkins moves behind the exterior reminiscent of a nice grandfather – the real person is always more complex than even the most nuanced image of him. On the other hand, Wilkins describes Pratchett’s struggle with dementia, his growing inability to remember, imagine and use words. Thus, it is not just a biography, but a universal story about the need to ‘defy the threat of dimming’.
